The Corner That Held a Town Together: Diggle’s in Its Prime
Diggle’s was more than just a shop for many families in Rothesay. It served as a local gathering place where people picked up their daily necessities, shared news, and caught up with neighbours. Norman Diggle ran the store with a steady presence from the 1920s into the 1960s, becoming a familiar and trusted figure in the community. After his passing, the Diggle family continued to keep the business going into the 1970s, maintaining the same welcoming atmosphere that locals remembered. Small corner stores like this played an important role in village life, offering convenience close to home and a sense of connection that larger stores could not replace. Thanks to the Rothesay Living Museum, we can still look back on Diggle’s as part of the everyday rhythm of Rothesay in an earlier time.
