Crossing the Current: The Ferry That Never Stopped Running

The Kingston Peninsula ferry has long been a familiar part of daily life for people living along the Kennebecasis. For many families, the ferry was and continues to be more than just a way to cross the water. It is part of the routine that connects friends, school, work, and community events across the peninsula and the Valley. In 1965, when this photo was taken, crossing by ferry often meant waiting in line with neighbours, catching up on local news, and watching the river move with the seasons. The pace was slower and the crossing provided a quiet moment between destinations. Even today, the ferry continues to serve as an important link and a reminder of the region’s long relationship with the water. Thank you to Jim Murray for sharing this glimpse into a familiar and enduring part of our local history.
